A digital platform that makes loneliness visible – and shareable.
MIO
As my Bachelor Project i created MIO together with my colleagues – a web-based experience that transforms personal loneliness into a visual, anonymous expression. Through an interactive avatar generator, the platform gives young adults a low-threshold space to reflect, connect, and rethink how we speak about solitude.
THE PROBLEM
Loneliness among young adults is on the rise – yet it remains largely invisible in public discourse.
Although openness and awareness around mental health are growing, the topic of loneliness still carries a strong sense of shame. Existing support offers are often too direct or intimidating, deterring those who might benefit most.
Our Goal
With MIO, we wanted to create a low-threshold, anonymous space where people can explore their own sense of loneliness — without stigma, without pressure.
Rather than offering instant solutions, MIO focuses on visibility and reflection. We set out to replace shame with curiosity, and make it easier for people to take the first step toward dealing with their emotions
We started with research and analysis, including interviews, case studies, and expert consultation (with a psychologist) to better understand how loneliness is experienced and how people engage with emotional topics online.
From there, we developed a 12-question interactive survey, carefully designed to balance emotional depth with accessibility. Each answer directly shapes a generative digital avatar: an abstract visual representation that doesn’t reflect appearance, but instead expresses how one’s loneliness feels.
