App Redesign for an Optimized Outdoor Experience
Komoot
Komoot is an outdoor navigation app built for adventure.
As part of a redesign project during my studies, we reimagined the app’s interface and user experience to make route planning more intuitive, accessible, and enjoyable. With improved structure, clearer navigation, and new features, our concept aims to better support users on every step of their outdoor journey.
Old Design
Complex User Interface
Limited User Guidance
No Community Engagement
Limited Offline Functionality
The KOMOOT app faces challenges in user engagement and premium subscription adoption due to a complex user interface, unclear navigation, and an insufficient onboarding process.
Process & Approach
The redesign process began with a detailed analysis of the existing Komoot app alongside competitor research (e.g., AllTrails, Bergfex). We explored both best and worst practices to understand where Komoot could improve in usability, onboarding, and visual clarity.
Key goals for the new app included:
Simplifying complex navigation
Enhancing visual hierarchy and readability
Improving onboarding and personalization
Introducing clear, scalable UI components
NEW
The redesign improves usability, visual clarity, and social connection – while introducing a playful, memory-driven features. It empowers users to not just plan their adventures, but share and relive them with others.
Smart Onboarding
Personalized Route Suggestions
Enhanced Map & Route Info
Offline Access
Community Integration
New Features
We introduced Komoot Spot as a gamification to enrich the outdoor experience. At specific points along a route, users receive a notification when they’re nearby.
They can:
Take a selfie and a photo of the surroundings
Add a short caption or thought
Share it with the community
Other users visiting the same spot can view and interact with those entries – creating a shared memory space tied to real locations and strengthening the sense of community.
